Whiplash

Lansing Chiropractor Explains 3 Things to Know about Whiplash

Have you ever been in a car accident or fallen from a height, then experienced uncomfortable symptoms in and around your neck? This could be whiplash, and if left untreated, you could end up dealing with long-term health issues. Our Leavenworth and Lansing, KS chiropractor and staff encourage everyone to understand some basic facts about whiplash so they can better protect themselves from this common cause of neck pain.

.

With this in mind, here are three things we think you should know about whiplash.

1. Whiplash Has Multiple Causes

Whiplash happens when your neck snaps forward and backward like a whip, due to some external force like a sudden change of direction. Most people associate whiplash with major car crashes. Research has found that whiplash symptoms can develop after auto accidents involving speeds of just 5 to 10 miles per hour!

In addition to fender benders and major auto collisions, whiplash can also develop after slips and falls at work or during sporting events. You might be more at risk for developing whiplash if you have other risk factors like a weak core, poor posture, older age, previous injuries, or high levels of stress in your life.

2. Whiplash Involves More Than Neck Pain

Neck pain and stiffness are the primary symptoms of whiplash. Many people also notice issues such as headaches, jaw pain, ringing in the ears, shoulder pain, arm pain, and numbness in an arm or hand. These symptoms usually show up within a day or two following an accident, but sometimes people don’t notice anything wrong until a few days or weeks later.

This could be because elevated stress hormones can mask pain. The takeaway here is that even if you feel fine after an accident, it's a good idea to check with a chiropractor or other medical professional. Our doctor can detect hidden signs of injury and inflammation and initiate treatment ASAP, potentially preventing future pain and problems.

3. Chiropractic Care Is an Excellent Treatment for Whiplash

Our Lansing chiropractor has over 30 years of experience helping people recover from the acute symptoms of whiplash and avoiding long-term consequences of the condition. He uses tried and true techniques to promote healing from within, including spinal adjustments that help realign cervical joints, reduce pressure on spinal nerves and discs, and minimize pain signals in the nervous system.
